Free Agency Check-In
The Carolina Panthers certainly made a big splash in free agency. The deal for Devin Lloyd appears to be a fairly even one for both the player and the team. Lloyd brings talent and versatility to the defense, and the contract feels reasonable for what he is expected to contribute.
The signing of Jaelan Phillips, on the other hand, feels like more of a leap. It is a significant financial commitment for a player who has never produced more than six sacks in a season. Most reports indicate that Phillips plays the run well and is capable of generating pressure, but the production has yet to match the level of the contract.
Even so, the Panthers may feel comfortable with their depth at the position. With Nic Scourton, Phillips, and Pat Jones II in the rotation, the team appears to have several options available along the edge.
I also like the signing of John Metchie III. There still seems to be some untapped potential there. Metchie never really found a consistent role with the Houston Texans, and other stops were complicated by inconsistent quarterback play. With the right opportunity, there may be more production in his future.
The addition of Luke Fortner appears to be more of a short term solution. He likely projects as a one year player with the team, as the Panthers may ultimately look to the draft for a long term answer at center.
Depth along the offensive line remains a concern. Stone Forsythe is a player who could create problems if he is forced into the starting lineup for an extended period.
At this point, it would not be surprising if the Panthers are finished with their major free agency moves and begin to shift their focus toward the draft. Offensive tackle appears to be firmly in play. The injury to Ikem Ekwonu has put the team in a difficult spot, and veteran tackle Taylor Moton is likely entering his final season in Charlotte.
Because of that, it makes sense for the Panthers to address the position now. The need exists on both sides of the offensive line, and finding a long term solution at tackle could become a priority in the upcoming draft.
There is always the possibility of a surprise selection. Safety Caleb Downs could be an intriguing option if he were to slide down the board. Still, given the current roster situation, staying focused on the offensive line may ultimately be the most logical decision.
