Big Money Bet
I have to admit it, the first free agent signing by the Carolina Panthers is something the majority of fans are probably going to like, but I just do not like it.
Jaelan Phillips is reportedly set to receive a four year, $120 million contract with $80 million guaranteed. When you look at the stats, they are pretty underwhelming, especially when you consider he had only five sacks last season on a team that had significantly more defensive talent around him than the Panthers currently do.
To me, this feels like a panic move, bringing in a recognizable name to boost the position rather than signing someone who has consistently shown the production to justify that kind of money.
At that price tag, the expectations are massive. He has to be a 12 sack per year type of player. If he is not, this contract is going to look like a bust very quickly.
